Restaurants

One highlight of the trip is being able to experience Dominican food. One student enjoyed the food so much, he earned the nickname, “comelon” or “the one that eats a lot.” The Colonial Zone in Santo Domingo is filled with delicious eateries. Most of the restaurants in the country offer outside seating and offer many of the same famous Dominican dishes. “La Bandera,” meaning “the flag,” is one of the most popular dishes in the Dominican Republic. It includes roasted chicken, white rice, and stewed beans while being topped with a brown gravy sauce. One unavoidable side dish, tostones, are fried plantains. Another popular side dish is yucca, usually prepared by boiling or frying. Or try Mofongo, a unique entre of mashed fried plantains and pork skins.  The students on this trip particularly enjoyed a restaurant that specialized in empanadas. They came in beef, cheese, chicken, conch, and crab options.
